James stopped and held up a hand.

Tamara nearly bumped into him, exhaustion playing havoc with her attention. She skittered to a halt and looked at him questioningly.

She realized why he brought them to a stand-still.

Ahead, the trees ended, spreading out into a wide expanse of cleared space. A mile away, the first sign of civilization waited for them.

Rows of buildings, most small and barely discernible one from another, sat sentry and, even from the distance, a few beings could be seen walking around. She squinted as she raised a hand to her forehead, trying to catch as much detail as she could.
